What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is when the optic nerve becomes damaged from pressure building up in the eye. Glaucoma usually affects people that are older.
What Causes Glaucoma?
Pressure builds up when drainage channels in the eye stop working properly. Liquid travels through drainage channels to keep the eye moist. Once this channel stops, pressure starts building up.
Some groups of people are more susceptible to glaucoma than others. These include people who are over 40, and if you have had any of the following:
- Thin cornea
- Pills or eyedrops with steroids
- Eyes with high pressure
- Optic nerve issues
- Eye surgery or injury
- Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure
There are several types of glaucoma. They are open-angle, narrow-angle or acute closed, and congenital glaucoma.
What are the Symptoms of Glaucoma?
Symptoms vary, based on what type of glaucoma a patient has. Open-angle is the most common type of glaucoma. The main symptom is vision loss, which usually doesn't happen until the disease has progressed for some time.
Symptoms vary with narrow-angle glaucoma. Symptoms include:
- Foggy or blurry vision
- Vomiting and nausea
- Intense eye pain
- Pupil that is dilated
- Headaches near the affected eye
- Halos near lights
If you have any of the above symptoms, go to the emergency room or see an ophthalmologist right away to get treated.
How is Glaucoma Treated?
There are several ways to treat glaucoma. Treatment for this eye disease include medication, usually in the form of eyedrops, laser surgery, and other types of surgery. Treatment is determined on the type and severity of the glaucoma.
